How do I open an inherited IRA?
How do I open an inherited IRA?
Updated over 7 months ago

To open a Beneficiary (Inherited) IRA, you will need to complete the Standard Account Application and provide a copy of the death certificate for the deceased person whose IRA you are inheriting.

When completing section 2 in the application, please note:

  • You will need to open the same account type as the IRA that you are inheriting - e.g. if you are inheriting a Traditional IRA, open a Traditional IRA; if you are inheriting a Roth IRA, open a Roth IRA

  • For the Funding Method, select Beneficiary / Inherited IRA

  • For the Beneficiary IRA Title, please title as: [Your Name], Bene FBO [Deceased Name] (Deceased)

    • For example: if Jane Smith is inheriting John Smith's IRA, the Beneficiary IRA title should be "Jane Smith, Bene FBO John Smith (Deceased)"

After completing the application, please submit a copy of the death certificate for the deceased person whose IRA you are inheriting via email to [email protected] or by online upload at choiceapp.io/help (select Documents & Forms for Processing from the Topic dropdown).
